SANFORD POLICE DEPARTMENT PURCHASES THREE NEW TASER X-12s

Monday, January 9, 2012

"It looks like a shotgun with a yellow pump.  But this is actually a long-range Taser.  Sanford police bought three of them, because the police chief has noticed a trend in Sanford and across the country with people who are suicidal or mentally ill getting into confrontations where officers had no choice but to use deadly force.  Hand-held Tasers discharge for five seconds and are only good up to 20 feet -- too close if someone pulls a weapon and charges at an officer.  The X12 Taser is accurate up to 100 feet and has a 20 second discharge, giving officers time to disarm and subdue the suspect.  The police chief in Sanford, Tom Connolly, Jr., says if these $700 Tasers save even one life, they have more than paid for themselves.  He plans to have at least two officers team up on confrontations in the future.  One armed with an X12 and one with a standard weapon as backup, just in case.  Chief Connolly believes that Sanford may be the first police force in Maine with these long-range tasers."
