Sanford Police K-9 Division
The Sanford Police Department began the use of police K-9's in the mid 70's. Since that time, a total of nine K-9 teams served to augment the Patrol Division. Currently, we have a team consisting of Officer Jason Champlin with K-9 Kruger. Our Police K-9's live with their handlers at home and are a part of the family.
The use of a police K-9 proves to be a valuable tool for patrol officers by assisting in locating key elements on a case. Patrol K-9's can locate suspects who have fled a scene by tracking the route the suspect traveled, locating evidence connected to a crime, searching buildings for a suspect hidden within, locating lost persons, and officer protection against aggressive attacks. Drug service K-9's are used to locate illegal drugs found on the streets. Additionally, K-9 teams conduct demos for various public groups, to include elementary schools.
